Ethnic strife has plagued Nigeria since she gained her independence in 1960; up till date she is still at the mercy of ethnic strife. Despite calls from humanitarian and governmental organizations to sensitize the people on the need for social coexistence, ethnic violence and religious conflict—these recalcitrant and venomous foes of our existence still take center stage in the theater of life in Nigeria.
The name Plateau was derived from the Jos Plateau. It has a population of about 3.5 million people. Plateau state is multi-ethic; moreover, Christianity and Islam are the two dominant religions in the state.
Jos, the capital of Plateau state had always been a peaceful settlement of people of different cultural and religious backgrounds; in peace they dwelled without fear of their neighbours. Jos was a land of plenty and grace—a lush land with heavenly climatic weather. However, a wave of violence would sweep this land of peace, plenty and grace—disaster would hunt down even the meek—Jos would become graveyard of the innocent.
Nigeria (and indeed the world) is fast loosing Jos (a victim of religious /ethnic conflict) to the pitch-black darkness of the grave. Enough lives have been extinguished; therefore, where there is hatred, may the love of God the creator of all increase.
Now is not the time for apportioning blames; this will only cripple the peace process; this is the time for forgiveness and reconciliation so that our land may enjoy the effusion of peace. This is not the time for the lifting up of our horns and speak with outstretched necks; but a time to lay down our swords because in our presence is the Prince of peace. He demands we break all flashing arrows, the shields and swords of vengeance—He demands we destroy all weapons of destruction and sorrow. May we heed to His voice so that The Lord God may save and heal all the afflicted of the land irrespective of religious backgrounds.
Stop the killing—let us put an everlasting end to this show of shame, senseless waste…Jos is bleeding profusely—her blood is wailing!
On the internet, people are letting out streams of invectives at one another concerning this issue; such will not help matters but aggravate it; we are in a hole—for peace sake lets stop digging. Let us stop casting blames and the pointing of accusing fingers; rather, we should come together and rebuild what violence destroyed. This is a time to recover that which hatred stole from us. Now is a time to uproot the creeping weed of prejudice from our land, and sow the seeds of friendship and brotherliness or else, soon there shall be nothing left to live for when all (even) posterity is lost.
Prejudice, he sought to make us objects of scorn and derision to each other; he has poured out blood like water all around Jos—he has inundated Jos with the blood of our kinsmen! Jos is DIEING!!!
The Jos violence, whatever may be the cause, local politics, economics or rights to grazing lands, it must stop!!!
A canopy of dark clouds above has sealed off our homes in a tragic solitude. Even children are made to breathe in air charged with gunpowder and burning flesh because with our own hands we invited the sons of hell into our homes to wrought death and destruction and a cascade of extinction, and hence, torment our children with ceaseless nightmares—the nightmares must cease! On December 24th, people when out as usual to do their last minute-shopping in preparation for the Christmas celebration, unknown to them that death awaits them at the market square: two bombs went off near a large market. A third hit a mainly Christian area of Jos, while the fourth was near a road that leads to the city's main mosque.
According to an official with the National Emergency Management Agency who spoke with journalists said that he counted 80 deaths from the explosions and the retaliatory violence that followed.
Men harangued by prejudice wield axes, and without reasoning, they handed the life of our dove into the hands of the brute beast called violence. Haunts of violence filled the land—even the blood of babes flowed to further redden the Jos' sand—let us stop the killing and put an everlasting end to this show of shame and senseless waste…Jos is bleeding profusely—her blood is wailing!
If this is about who is best serving God, then we are sadly mistaken because violence is never the attribute of God. God Almighty never said at any point in time that He needed us to fight for Him against those who are not serving Him rightly or those who are not serving Him at all. He never said we should take up arms and kill those whom we believe are not serving Him. Rather, He said to love and pray for such so that they may come to know Him. Those who think they can fight for God are only limiting Him to an helpless being who needs mere mortals to pass judgment on those who have sinned against Him; judgment belongs to God, lets live it to Him to decide, however, lets learn to tolerate one another for only God knows why He allowed several religions, races and ethnic groups to exits under His sun.
Stop the killing—lets put an everlasting end to this show of shame, senseless waste and hate—Jos is bleeding profusely—her blood is wailing!
But if this is about politics, then I say, if truly we are patriots of this great nation, we should stop this FOOLISH FIGHT—we should stop this show of shame and senseless waste of valuable lives and property—we should stop the killing of our kinsmen! We need each other to make our country Nigeria a greater nation than she is today. Suffice it to say here that every Nigerian created by God (which is virtually every Nigerian irrespective of religious and ethnic background) has a role to play towards building this nation. Every man, woman and child, God has blessed with potentials hence— all has something positive to contribute towards the enhancement of humankind; why deprive our great nation (even the world) of this great minds?
This show of madness is as a result of our prayerlessness and faithlessness; the greedy flames of hatred have consumed many homes rendering us homeless at home.
Let us stop the killing and put an everlasting end to this show of shame, hate and senseless waste—Jos is bleeding profusely—her blood is wailing!
The path to nation building is not through bloodshed but unity and the preservation of lives. The path to nation building is never through greed for power and gluttony for our national cake; but through the illuminated path of tolerance and the spirit of sharing. Stop the killing…lets put an everlasting end to this show of shame, senseless waste and hate…Jos is bleeding profusely…her blood is wailing!
Lets be wise—let us open our eyes to the harm we are causing ourselves; no man in his right senses will deep his hand into a pot of boiling water. Let us cease to listen to the ranting of prejudice who has unleashed indignation and hostility filling our days with futility and nights with terror. Let's be wise—the precious blood of Jos is wailing!
Henceforth, we should cease to listen to those venomous political reptiles who seek to crawl the corridors of power at all cost. Those enemies of progress who are using the peasants of our society to perpetuate crimes; disrupting our peace in other to achieve their selfish ends. What these peasants get in exchange for disrupting the peace of the whole nation is not more than the followings: cups of rice, beans, millet, maize and pocket change. For these, they would swarm like bees—subjugate their father's land, and sting the peace out of her.
Our peace is worth far more than all the plantations of rice, beans, maize, millets and bank notes the world over. Hence, let us cease to sell our souls to the sons of that ancient serpent; that constrictor that sought to swallow our nation whole.
Christians and Muslims, I implore all to resist the serpent in prayers— enough of his manipulations! We should desire to live together as a people; if truly we serve the God of peace and love we will adhere to these words.
Our children are washing, fast are they learning from our words and actions; let us lead them through the illuminated path of peace and brotherliness; but not through this murky and slippery path of prejudice. I implore us, if truly we love our children and seek the best for them, then, let us strive to be the good teachers that God the creator says we should be by listening to the soft voice of peace and not the ranting of prejudice.
The blood of Jos is wailing on the streets—she can be heard on the path leading to every worship grounds—she projects at the market square—she wails—her lamp is dwindling. Let us stop the killing and put an everlasting end to this show of shame, hate and senseless waste—Jos is dieing!
For our sakes, let us bring back the days of oneness and harmony. For the sake of posterity, let us beckon to the days of brotherliness and bliss; because yesterday, as one we dwelled together—our legs knew not the dance called helter-skelter—afraid of kinsmen who swallowed the heart of hyena. Yesterday we knew no fears—our eyes shed no tears. Yesterday we had silk on our backs not these pieces of filthy rags; we had bread, maize and beans not serpents and indigestible flints. O yesterday we had shelter—a home in our sumptuous Nigeria. We had warm beds—comfy cozy we reposed without dread. We had starry nights—blessed brilliant daylights! Alas, the boisterous we of yesterday is reduced to a jumpy timid we of today; look at us—a mere shadow of what we were yesterday. I implore all; let us beckon to sweet yesterday so that we may see tomorrow.
What we are today is as a result of our heeding to the ranting of prejudice, that recalcitrant and sapient foe of peace; enough of the foolishness—let us be wise and tune to peace—his soft voice beckons us to the bosom of bliss. Let us strive to be his acolytes so that we may all see tomorrow.
We need to break hatred's barriers like the wall of Berlin, lend a helping hand like the Samaritan of old so that we may see tomorrow. We need to purge ourselves of hatred like spring washes away winter so colours can return to our souls as when our landscape celebrates life so we may see tomorrow.
Hatred is humankind's worst enemy—he'll cause one to destroy himself and others, like the suicide attack of Sept' 11—let's purge ourselves of hatred so that we may see tomorrow.
Love is calling on us—crying and pleading that we should come, for he longs to educate us—to save us from the jaws of hatred so that we may see tomorrow.
Christian and Muslims of our sumptuous Nigeria, let us stop the killing and put an everlasting end to this show of Godlessness—Jos is DIEING—her blood is wailing!
