How to Make a Portfolio for Photographers

    • 1). Sort through the digital files you want to showcase. Edit your portfolio to reflect the type of business or accounts you want to attract. If you are pitching an advertising agency, create a commercial product portfolio. Attract fashion design or real estate clients with your best clothing or architectural images, or highlight work from your recent African safari if you want to pitch a travel magazine.

    • 2). Eliminate all but 20 to 30 images of the selected style to show that you can consistently take good photographs. Categorize your images into themes or color schemes; for instance, arrange black and white images or color images shot with the same filter together. Presenting your work into a cohesive gallery takes the viewer on an emotional journey and let's the viewer see your creative process. Scattered images that aren't threaded together can be disjointed.

    • 3). Present your physical images in a traditional leather portfolio to tell a story. Place your prints in an archival box. Burn your images on a disk or upload them to an online portfolio website. Most photographers have both a physical and online presence and use them together. It frequently boils down to the client's availability and what is most convenient.

    • 4). Enclose your personal contact information in the portfolio to identify your work and so the client can reach you for future business.

    • 5). Present your work to another professional photographer to get his opinion before you show it to your client. You may be too close to your work and not able to gauge it objectively. Accept any criticism and apply edits as needed to your portfolio.
