- 1). Write a list of all of your obligations. This might include attending class, completing homework and reviewing it, sports, working, religious obligations and volunteer work.
- 2). Label each item on your list of obligations with a number to denote its priority level. Mark the highest priority activities, such as studying, attending class, and going to work, as level one obligations. Mark activities that are important, but less mandatory, such as volunteer work, with a two. Label activities that are least important, such as recreation, with a three.
- 3). Block out class and work hours that occur at non-discretionary times, by writing their hours on the calendar in red pen. Mark blocks of study time in red pen. Schedule time to review notes immediately before and after class. Schedule a weekly review session to recap the week's assignments, topics and deadlines. Schedule time -- not only for regular weekly study -- but also special projects, papers and exams. Denote any other level-one priorities with red pen.
- 4). Write level-two priorities on the calendar in blue pen in the remaining time. After you have scheduled all level-two activities, use the remaining time to schedule level-three activities, including rest and recreation. However, do not neglect to schedule appropriate time for restful and creative activities; usually several hours a week in addition to adequate nightly sleep. Lack of recreation will undercut your ability to perform effectively during work and study periods.
