- 1). Navigate your boat to waters where the cod gather. The fish typically use logs or wreckage in the water as hiding places.
- 2). Use a 50-lb. class line with about a 100 feet of line. Use a short, flexible rod. Codfish put up a bit of a fight, often pulling the line downward as you are pulling upward. Use an 8- to 20-ounce sinker to drop your line down near the water's bottom, where the cod primarily lurk. The line should be straight up and down.
- 3). Use small, slow moving baitfish that are normally found near the bottom of the water, such as crayfish. Codfish also feed on sea worms, sea clams, crabs and shrimp. Move the bait a little bit, making it appear more natural.
- 4). Reel the cod in slow and steady once hooked, pulling the fish upward. If the hook is embedded well into the fish, the cod will not be able to escape.
