Tanglewood Jazz Festival in Massachusetts

    Tanglewood

    • Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It was a gift to the orchestra from Mrs. Gorham Brooks and Miss Mary Aspinwall Tappan in 1936. Tanglewood was originally the 210-acre Tappan family estate. The first concert at Tanglewood took place under a tent in 1937. Due to weather concerns, Tanglewood added a more permanent structure in 1938. This building, "The Serge Koussevitzky Music Shed," (usually referred to as simply "The Shed") remains in use to this day. Since then, Tanglewood has expanded by forty acres and has added several additional studios and concert venues.

    Performers

    • Performers at the Tanglewood Jazz Festival generally include a mix of emerging jazz artists, popular contemporary artists and older artists who have worked with jazz greats. The festival features many styles of jazz, ranging from free jazz to Latin fusion to swing. Noteworthy performers throughout the festival's years include Dave Brubeck, Nnenna Freelon, Regina Carter, Kurt Elling, Julian Lage, Hank Jones, Jon Faddis, Paquito d'Rivera and John Pizzarelli.

    Jazz Cafe

    • The Jazz Café at Tanglewood is a tent that hosts smaller performances before main stage performances at the festival. Admission to Jazz Café performances is free with a ticket to main stage events on a given day. According to MassLive.com, Tanglewood's senior project coordinator Dawn Singh describes the Jazz Café as an "informal, cabaret-style venue featuring emerging artists." In 2010, for the first time ever, the Tanglewood Jazz Festival is asking for video submissions from artists interested in performing at the Jazz Café during the festival. This is an effort to discover and highlight unknown talent. Tanglewood is choosing four up-and-coming artists to perform at the Café via the video submission contest.

    Ticketing

    • Ticket prices for the Festival range from $18-77; one-day lawn passes are $34. Purchase tickets online, by telephone or in person at the Boston Symphony Orchestra Box Office.
