- 1). Volunteer with an organization in the same general field as you desire to work. If you desire a career as a social coordinator in the health field, consider volunteering at a local retirement home.
- 2). Earn an associate's or a bachelor's degree in the field or in complementary areas such as parks and recreation, leisure studies, social work, human studies, communications, psychology, organizational behavior, sociology or English.
- 3). Search job-related sites such as monster.com, craigslist.com, careerbuilder.com and localized sites such as that of your area newspaper. Use search terms such as "social coordinator" and "activities director."
- 4). Utilize networking sites such as twitter.com and brazencareerist.com to meet people in the industry as well as those who have already procured jobs as social coordinators. Ask for advice and leads as appropriate.
- 5). Prepare your resume. Be sure to promote yourself properly by highlighting all related volunteer and paid activities. If your related volunteer work outshines your paid work in this field, list it first. Consider using a functional resume instead of the traditional chronological format.
- 6). Be personable at the interview. An important qualification for the position is people skills. Be sure to listen to the interviewer and have intelligent questions prepared.
- 7). Ask for the job at the interview. After the interview, write a thank-you note to the interviewer. Include something insightful or personal that shows that you were listening. Follow up via a phone call.
