      North Carolina is in the southeastern United States and features a variety of attractions, including the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains in the western part of the state. This mountainous region is ideal for families seeking a log cabin getaway because of the hiking, cycling and mountain climbing opportunities available. Parks that facilitate these outdoor activities include Pisgah and Cherokee National Forests.

    Cataloochee Ranch Lodging

    • The Cataloochee Ranch in Maggie Valley is nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains area, about 50 minutes from Asheville. This cabin resort is also a five-minute drive from the Cataloochee Ski Area, home of winter activities such as skiing and snowmobile riding. Cataloochee offers amenities such as an outdoor swimming pool, hiking trails on the property, picnic areas and staff-prepared meals for breakfast and dinner. The resort also has an equestrian center for horse owners, as well as paths for horseback riding. Families can stay in the resort's two- and three-bedroom cabins, such as Laurel, Miss Judy's House and Wintergreen. Each cabin has a living room area, kitchen and back porch. Suites include living room areas and private balconies. Laurel and Miss Judy's House also have a fireplace in the living room.

    Mountainaire Inn & Cabins

    • Mountainaire is right off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Blowing Rock and provides access to natural attractions such as Grandfather Mountain, which is a 20-minute drive from the resort. Visitors can ski at the nearby Hawksnest Ski Resort, about 30 minutes from Mountainaire. This resort has a garden area with picnic facilities and paths for nature walks and is close to the shops and restaurants in Blowing Rock. Three family cabins are available at Mountainaire: Fishing, Moose and Mountain. Each cabins has a living room area with a fireplace, fully furnished kitchen, front porch and dining room. The resort also has two couples cabins as well as guestrooms.

    Rock Creek Cabins

    • Located in Bryson City, Rock Creek is between the Great Smoky Mountains and Nantahala National Forest, which offers hiking trails and camping facilities. Rock Creek is also within 20 minutes of Fontana Lake, a 10,230-acre body of water that has fishing and boating facilities. Hiking trails are also located on the property of Rock Creek Cabins. Oconaluftee Indian Village, less than 25 minutes from Rock Creek, offers visitors a glimpse into 18th-century Cherokee culture with displays of arts and crafts. Accommodations at Rock Creek include three-bedroom cabins that sleep six to eight people. These cabins have amenities such as fully furnished kitchens, living rooms with fireplaces and satellite television.
