- 1). Decide the location of your butterfly garden. Choose an area that is in full sun. Outline the area with stakes and string.
- 2). Excavate the area with a spade or shovel to remove sod and expose the soil.
- 3). Work organic compost into the soil with a garden rake or hoe.
- 4). Select a combination or perennial and annual butterfly-attracting plants for a full garden.
- 5). Dig holes in the excavated soil with a shovel so that the holes are large enough for the root systems of the selected plants.
- 6). Remove a plant from its pot and gently separate the root system with your fingers. Set the plant's root system into a hole. Place tall-growing plants near the back of the garden, place mid-sized plants near the middle of the garden, and place shorter plants in the front areas of the garden. Cover the plant's root system with soil and water the plant thoroughly.
