I remember when I first came into this business over 20 years ago, I was trained not to care about the person I was talking to on the other end of the phone.
That person on the other end of the line was just someone that owed my client money and my sole purpose in life, (during business hours), was to extract the money that was owed my client.
I have to admit, I was pretty good at what I did.
And even today, every person that chooses to come into the collection business is trained in the same manner.
The laws that are on the books may restrict the bill collector just a little bit as to what they can and cannot say.
But the objective is still the same.
To get the money and get the money now.
Look, if you buy something on credit or borrow money, the right thing to do is to pay it back.
But sometimes bad things happen to good people that may cause a problem in fulfilling a contract or making an on-time payment.
But you have to know that you will often never win by talking to a bill collector.
The only chance you might have is not to talk to them at all.
Your best course of action is to choose the power of the written word.
What I mean to say is, put to use the good old fashion letter, an envelope and a certified stamp.
Once a collection agency and the collector receive a letter from you requesting that they cease and desist any further attempts to communicate with you over the phone, they might as well delete your phone number from their system.
However, you just might receive one final call from the agencies agent for the sole purpose of informing you as to their next course of action.
Here is my advice when you receive that final call.
Listen to what they have to say and once they are done, your only response to the bill collector should be 'I understand what you have just told me (if in fact you do) and I am requesting that you abide by the letter that I sent you certified mail.
Thank you for your time and good-bye...
click.
That's it...
that's all.
Now, this will not in any way eliminate or cancel out your debt.
If the debt is valid and just, you must pay what you legally and justifiably owe.
This strategy at least allows you some breathing room to cretae a strategy to pay your account and you won't have to deal with any more harassing phone calls.
Take control...
today is the beginning of the rest of your life!Make it count!
