American Idol Season 11 - Auditions Recap January 26, 2012

American Idol's fifth round of season 11 auditions came from Galveston, Texas. The return of a previous Hollywood Week contestant topped this episode's parade of contestants.

1. Baylie Brown, age 21

Five years ago at age 16 Baylie Brown auditioned for American Idol and made it to Hollywood Week. She was eliminated after forgetting words while performing in the group round. She is back now, older, and a better singer. The song she chose to sing was Bon Jovi's "Bed Of Roses" from their 1992 album Keep the Faith. The song climbed to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and so far is their second to last top 10 hit.

Cortez Shaw delivered one of the most unique performances of the night. He took Adele's #1 hit "Someone Like You" and turned it into an uptempo R&B jam. That caused Jennifer Lopez to exclaim, "That's what that song sounds like!" The judges quickly ushered Cortez Shaw into Hollywood Week.

4. Kristine Osorio, age 28

At age 28, the upper limit for American Idol contestants, this audition is Kristine Osorio's last opportunity. She had a band with her husband for a few years and then got pregnant and put performing on hold. She chose to pay for a plane ticket to audition for American Idol instead of pay her divorce lawyer. Kristine Osorio sang Adele's song "One and Only" from the album 21.

5. Ramiro Garcia, age 28

Ramiro Garcia came with one of the more unusual stories of the night. He was born without ears and doctors had insisted he would never hear or speak. However, with successful surgeries beginning at age 4, he was able to hear and now sing. Ramiro Garcia is a worship leader and sang the spiritual "Amazing Grace." The song is a Christian hymn with lyrics that date back to 1779. It is estimated that "Amazing Grace" is performed 10 million times a year.
