What Is The Average Jogging Speed?

This is a very common question asked by many jogging beginners. The principle is very simple:

Jogging is all about adjusting your running speed to a proper tempo, which is the deciding factor in developing your body and health through running.

This tempo largely depends upon your heart rate. Let me explain what I mean by this.

Your heart rate represents the number of times your heart beats per minute, commonly reffered to as "BPM" – beats per minute.

The truth is, you should never concern yourself with such thing as an average jogging speed. Reccomended jogging speed is different from an individual to individual. You should ONLY be looking at your heart rate, and there's a formula that you should become familiar with.

Common formula to define one's optimal jogging BPM is:

(220-age) * 0.8 BPM

- for example if you are 30 yrs old:  (220-30) * 0.8 = 152 BPM (beats per minute)

This further indicates that you should adjust your jogging speed to induce a heart rate anywhere around 152 BPM.

This speed varies on the individual's physical fitness, age and other factors. It's often a relatively small speed in comparison to other running techniques, which is good because it enables people that are out of shape a proper and efficient workout.

Your average jogging speed progresses over time, as you begin to develop certain physical fitness. You have to make sure that you do not guide yourself by the speed you're running at, but always by the heart rate! The speed will then take care of itself.

As you may already know, jogging offers plenty of benefits for your mind, body and your soul. Have a quick look at the jogging benefits and decide whether you're willing to commit to this sport. I can promise you one thing though - if you do try jogging for a week, and do it properly - there's a big chance you will get attached to it.

Also, make sure you learn how to jog properly, so you don't suffer the consequences of wasting your time doing improper workouts and even quite possibly hurting yourself.

Have a great day, and remember to take care of your body!
