Most remix maker hobbyists like myself are just that....hobbyists. However, over the months that I have been playing around with remix maker software and producing what I consider to be decent remixes, I discovered that if you are any good at doing this as a remix hobbyist, you can actually earn money, prizes and become semi-famous!!
Some prizes run in the thousands of dollars and many of the first place winners also receive promotional packages signed by the original artists as well as mention on their websites or other media outlets. Most of these contests have rules including age (13+ for most) and you must not be bound to any agreements or contracts currently. Also, the remix you create will no longer be yours. By entering you are waiving your rights to this remix (this holds for most contests I have seen). You are usually provided with the track that is to be remixed for the contest. The remix contest website usually also includes the stubs and samples from the original so that you can import these into your remix maker and start remixing the song. There should be no fees necessary to enter these contests. If there is a fee, I would probably stay away from these contests. Some remix contests require you to export to.MP3, some.WAV. Just make sure you read the rules carefully. Normally the tempo is also specified, though approximate.
The type of software you use should be fairly high quality. I use DubTurbo 2.0, but there are many on the market that will export to the quality required by producers. You can even find free software as well. If you would like to hold your own remix contest, there are also websites that will allow you to hold your own contests. You specify the rules, prizes, deadlines, post the song, stubs and away you go. Usually these are the same sites as where the contests are being held. So it's pretty easy to find them.
So for all of you hobbyists out there who dabble in remix making, give your hand a try at a contest and see if you can win some real cash! For more information on remix contests, follow this link and check the blog posts for upcoming and current contests and remix contest details and deadlines. Feel free to also post and contribute to my blog as well. We are always looking for remix hobbyists to contribute to the remix making community.
