- 1). Install an additional video card if necessary. If your computer has only one video connection, an additional card can be purchased at a local hardware store. You will need an additional connection in order to use the full functionality of the multiple monitor support in Windows.
- 2). Connect your monitors to the video adapters and power on your computer. The adapters are accessed via the back panel of your computer. The connectors of the monitor cables are unique and will only connect to the correct adapter. Push the connector into the adapter then tighten down the thumb screws on each side to secure in place. At first, you will notice the displays mirror each other. This is the default behavior of multiple monitors connected in Windows.
- 3). Open your display settings. In Vista this is done by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting "Personalize," then "Display Settings." In XP, right-click on the desktop and choose "Properties," then the "Display" tab.
- 4). Edit the settings for the two monitors to suit your preferences. You can change the alignment or size, alter the resolution, and allow your desktop to extend over both monitors rather than being mirrored.
