Try some of the following suggestions for a great and inexpensive time!
One of the best ways to save money on your Maui vacation is to take advatage of all the island's amazing natural resources!
- Go swimming at one of Maui's 81 beaches which are all are free and open to the public and many have showers, restrooms.
- Have a picnic. A lot of the beach parks have picnic tables and barbeque pits for public use.
- Go snorkeling where you can spend a few hours or a whole day exploring Maui's sea life, up close and personal. Rent a set of gear from one of Maui's many snorkel shops and go on you own adventure!
- Have some fun body surfing. Let the blue water of the Pacific Ocean carry you as you body surf in some of the most spectacular locations.
- Maui is perfect for sun worshipers. Go sunbathing from sunrise to sunset. Don't forget the sunscreen, though!
- Watch the sunset from any west facing shoreline. There is nothing more spectacular than a Maui sunset. Sip on a tropical drink (virgin or alcoholic) and enjoy Mother Nature's finest work.
- Whale watch from the shore. You can watch the 400 humpback Whales that spend the winter in Maui from the beach or your lanai.
- Catch up on some reading. Bring your own book, or visit the historical public library in Lahaina and sit on the beach, by the pool or pick a nice shady spot.
- Go beachcombing and collect some seashells at Kanaha Beach Park or Waiehee Beach.
- Watch the surfers, windsurfers, kitesurfers or paddleboarders from any shore.
- Try surfing or paddleboarding yourself! Take a two hour lesson from an experienced instructor, or if you would rather just rent a board and head out on your own, there are many locations throughout Maui suitable for just about any experience level.
- Learn to SCUBA dive. Take an Introductory course at one of the many dive locations from Kaanapali to Makena.
- Take in one of Maui's many local events. Maui is famous for Halloween (also called Mardi Gras of the Pacific), The Taro Festival, The Makawao Rodeo, The Maui County Fair. - Check out our manyplaygrounds. Kihei's Kamaole and Kalama Parks have free swings, slides, and jungle gyms.
- Go stargazing and let Hawaii's seclusion allow you to view the night sky unobstructed by big city lights and tall buildings. You can even go to the top of Haleakala Crater to view the stars.
- Play tennis at one of the public courts in Wailuku, Kahului, Kihei, Lahaina, Makawao, Pukalani, Haliimaile and Hana.
- Check out Hawaii's largest collection of whaling artifacts from Lahaina's whaling era at the Whale Museum. See short films on whaling and whales, art, a large scrimshaw collection and gift shop. Free tours by a certified marine naturalist may be arranged. The museum is open daily from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
- Go Hiking in Haleakala crater or the West Maui Mountains - Maui has more than fifty trails.
