What Is Cork Flooring and Where Does it Come From?

This question was presented to me today by my husband after he received a wood flooring catalog.
So I decided to complete a little research on the topic.
Most cork comes from the Cork Oak which is mostly grown European countries.
Cork is the bark of the tree which is harvested by hand every nine - twelve years.
Therefore cork is considered a renewable resource.
Also cork floors are made of the left over's from the wine stopper industry, making cork flooring a VERY GREEN choice.
Currently the color choices for cork flooring are equal to that of bamboo.
However it can be stained with any color of water based stain.
Cork offer comfort as well as durability.
It is easy on your feet and provided cushion with its many cellular air pockets.
Cork is very durable, and most installations come with a twenty-five year warranty.
Because cork is soft and porous it is ideal for reducing noise.
Applications: cork should be used in dry location and is not recommend for bathrooms, kitchens or laundry areas.
While most cork is used residential it is ideal for day care facilities and office buildings.
Maintenance: Never use an abrasive cleaner or ammonia based cleaning product.
It is recommended that you use a damp mom with a mild soap.
Cork can be swept or vacuumed.
Also a cork floor can be refinished once a year for a new look.
Or you can allow it age naturally.
Installation: Like laminate, cork floors can be glued down or installed as a floating floor utilizing a clicking system.
Nailing is NOT an option.
Installation can be done by the do it yourselfer or a professional.
