- 1). Look at the CD drive on the computer. Check to make sure it can burn CDs. Most CD drives are marked as "CD-Writer" or CD-RW indicating that the drive can burn CDs. If unsure, call your computer manufacturer to inquire about the specific computer's technical aspects.
- 2). Install CD-burning software onto the computer. Note that some computers may have factory-installed CD-burning software; check with the specific computer. If software needs to be downloaded, realize that some programs must be bought and others are free-ware; regardless of the software, the process of burning a CD does not change significantly. To view download options, check out sites such as cnet.com.
- 3). Insert a blank CD into the CD drive. Launch the CD burning software by double-clicking on its icon.
- 4). Choose what type of data you intend to burn onto the disc. Most CD-burning software ask whether you are writing a data CD (to store files for use on the computer) or an audio CD (for music files that can be played in audio CD players).
- 5). Add the data files to the CD. Many programs allow files to be dragged to burn onto a CD with a mouse and dropped into a window in the CD-burning program that represents the space on a CD.
- 6). Click on the "Burn CD" button. Some programs have a red dot (similar to the "Record" dot located on DVD remotes) or an option called "Burn" or "Write CD." Wait for the program to write the data on the CD. Once finished, remove the disc.
