Choosing your driving instructor is a very important but easy process, first of all think what you need, do you need a driving instructor, who can give you many lessons in a short period, or are you looking for someone who, can do the same time every week ?
Have you got any friends or familly, who can help you choose, who taught them ?
Were they happy, did they pass with a good result ?
Was the instructor on time ?
Was the instructor presentable, or do the look like they just left the pub ?
Was the instructors car clean ?
Ok so you have narrowed your search down to a few instructors, a few people may have recommended some instructors, you have been on the internet and found a few instructors, you may have seen an advert, or seen a flyer from a local driving school, so now you need to get on the phone or maby email your short list of instructors, and ask a few questions.
Is the instructor fully qualified ?
Ask them, if they are their badge(left hand side of the wind screen) will be green, a trainee instructor will have a pink badge.
Has your instructor been graded yet, a newly qualified instructor, may not have been graded yet.
What is you instructors grade, a grade 4, 5 or 6 is good ?
Can they prove their grade ?
How long have they been instructing, and what do they do to keep fully up to date with any changes ?
Is the instructor a member of any professional bodies, like the MSA ( motor school association ) or the DIA ( driving instructor association ) ?
Can they fit you in ?
Is the instructors website full of testimonials ?
What car does you instructor use ?
Will the instructor recommend theory aids ?
Will they advise and friends or familly members that you go out with, on what to practice and when to start practicing with other people ?
Can the driving school offer male and female instructors ?
Will they teach you everything you need to know, or will they only teach you what is included on the test ?
Ask them what you will be learning and why ?
Are the lesson prices really cheep, if so why ?
A good instructor is reasonable with their prices, a cheep instructor may well be desperate for pupils, if they are why, do they have pupils who leave them, if so why ?
What other types of instruction do they do, when you pass you may want to do further training pass plus, or even advanced driving in the future, are they able to supply this ?
How will the instructor help you if you get stuck on a particular subject when you are learning ?
Can the instructor offer a mock test before the driving test, can they offer another good instructor to do it, so that it feels more realistic ?
Is there anything that the instructor can do to help with nerves before and during the driving test ?
As in most professional industries, most driving instructors have a real passion for teaching, and many are good at their job, but by being selective you will increase your chances of geting a great instructor, as the training you receive will help you in becoming a safe and confident driver in your whole of you driving career.
