Definition: The Police or Law Enforcement Officers' Bill of Rights are terms commonly given to rules that govern the questioning of law enforcement officers who are under investigation, particularly in dealing with administrative investigations that may contain a criminal component. Arising from two U.S. Supreme Court Hearings, Garrity v. New Jersey and Gardner v. Broderick, the bill provides protections against self incrimination from compelled statements.
Several states have codified the bill into state statutes, and law enforcement agencies have included in its principles in policies and bargaining unit contracts.
