Scooter and Moped Safety

Riding a scooter or moped around town can be an easy and inexpensive mode of transportation to and from work or recreational activities.
Most people overlook the risk of injuries on these vehicles because they travel at low speeds, but similar to motorcycle or bicycle accidents, moped and scooter riders are exposed and vulnerable to surrounding cars and trucks.
The rider can be seriously injured in the event of an accident and should always operate a moped safely.
One of the biggest dangers with mopeds and scooters in traffic with automobiles is drivers not seeing a moped or simply forgetting about it when making a turn or changing lanes.
Cars also approach mopeds quicker than they anticipate on higher speed roads, increasing the likelihood of a rear-end collision.
How to Ride A Scooter Safely Riders should always wear safety gear when riding a moped or scooter on public roads with other cars and should also not operate the vehicle unless they are properly trained.
Among the best strategies for safe riding is making sure you are seen and that other drivers are always aware of where you are.
Some other suggestions include:
  • Wearing reflective clothing, especially at night
  • Using your horn to alert other drivers
  • Staying out of drivers' blind spots
  • Always use your turn signal
  • Always assume other drivers can't see you and anticipate the worst
If you anticipate an accident or that the driver doesn't know you are there, you will be better prepared to react and avoid a potentially deadly accident.
