- 1). Place your cigar plant in sunlight. While cigar plant tolerates partial shade, the plant will do best in full sunlight. Cigar plant tolerates nearly any well-drained soil type, including sandy, clay-based or alkaline soil.
- 2). Water cigar plant regularly and keep the soil consistently moist. While cigar plant tolerates occasional periods of drought, it is a tropical plant that prefers regular watering.
- 3). Fertilize cigar plant at planting time, using a balanced slow-release fertilizer applied according to label guidelines. Alternatively, use a general purpose granular or liquid garden fertilizer with a ratio such as 12-12-12 or 20-20-20 every other week throughout the growing season. If you use a granular fertilizer, water deeply immediately after fertilizing to avoid damaging the roots.
- 4). Plant cigar plant in a sturdy container with at least one drainage hole in the bottom if you choose to grow your cigar plant in a pot. Use a lightweight, commercial potting mixture. Check the moisture daily and water as needed to keep the soil consistently moist. Soil in containers dries quickly.
