Go Environmental Friendly With Cloth Diapers for Your Baby

Baby care requires a lot of research and responsibility. A baby's comfort is parents paramount concern. Potty training can be quite an irksome job for parents. While some parents like using disposable diapers for their baby, there are the environmentally conscious parents that prefer cloth diapers. The use of this dates back to centuries but they were not hygienic and safe as they are now. With the growing demand for it, the manufacturers of it have modified it keeping in mind the comfort and hygiene factor of babies and convenience of parents. These have become as easy to use as disposable diapers.

History of cloth diapers

Earlier these were rectangular or folded linen cloth, cotton, flannel or stockinet which were fastened with safety pins to keep them secure. Known as flat these days, earlier diapers were boiled to remove bacteria. The need for diapers for working mothers during World War II led to the 'diaper service'. Fresh cotton diapers were delivered whenever there was a need for it. Since these were difficult and messy to use on babies, in 1946, Marion Donovan, created a waterproof covering for diapers to prevent leakage which was known as 'Boater'. She was also granted the patent for using plastic snaps by replacing safety pins. With time, prefold diapers were introduced that consisted of flat diapers but were sewn together and pre-folded. Sybil Geeslin invented the first fitted diaper in 1950, which was called the Safe-T-Di-Dee diaper but after he sold the patent they were sold as Keystone Safe-T Di-Dee Diapers. However, in the 1960's the use of this fell out of favour with the growing demand for disposable diapers. In the 80's environmental issues concerning the use of disposable diapers brought the use cloth diapers to a favourable position. The invention of the modern diaper cover to go over flats and prefolds by Bummis, a Canadian company and the invention of the Snappi diaper fastener made cloth diapers user friendly and hygienic. The use of the Snappi diaper fastener prevails till date. In 1997, BornToLove.com, the first major diaper website emerged. Many manufacturing companies sprang up with the growing demand for cloth diapers. Modern day diapers are reusable and made from natural fibers, man-made materials or a combination of both. Nowadays, diapers are available in different prints, colours and sizes.
