How to Optimize 35mm Film

    • 1). Hold the camera steady when you take a picture. Not doing so is the most common cause of out-of-focus pictures. Squeeze the button with a steady pressure instead of quickly snapping the button.

    • 2). Read the directions on the package of film. The directions on the box will tell you what kind of pictures that particular speed of film will take best.

    • 3). Decide on what type of pictures you will be taking. If the roll of film will not be used up after a nature hike, and then you plan to photograph an indoor birthday party or a sporting event, you should choose a versatile speed. According to Kodak.com, 400 speed film is best for versatility; it will work in cloudy or sunny conditions, with flash for indoor pictures or action shots.

    • 4). Choose 100 speed film if you are going to be photographing outdoors under very sunny conditions.

    • 5). Select 200 speed film for posed pictures outdoors, where the participants won't be involved in action. This film speed is ideal for either partial shade or bright sunlight.

    • 6). Select 800 speed film for evening parties where only low light is available or other situations where you will need a flash. Remember, the flash will only reach about 10 meters, so allow for proper lighting if the subject is farther away. This film speed is also ideal for photographing sporting events.

    • 7). Choose 1600 speed film for special occasions like Halloween when you want to capture your children trick or treating or on nights when the moon is full for outdoor shots. It is expensive and really only necessary for certain evening shots.
