- 1). Turn off your Compaq laptop. Close the lid and disconnect the power adapter, if it is plugged in.
- 2). Turn your laptop upside down. Slide the battery release button and remove the battery from the computer.
- 3). Turn the laptop so that the back of the case is facing you. Remove the hard drive cover screw on the lower left corner of the laptop using a Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the hard drive retaining screw located 2 inches above the first screw.
- 4). Press the cover up and grip the tab, pulling gently to remove the hard drive from the laptop. Remove all of the screws securing the hard drive bracket to the drive. Inspect the drive for obvious physical defects or other damage. If the hard drive is damaged, it may cause issues with your computer.
- 5). Screw the drive bracket back onto the hard drive. Spray a short blast of canned air into the hard drive slot to ensure no dust is causing issues with your installation. Slide the hard drive back into place. Press the cover down. Fasten the hard drive and cover using the screws you removed earlier.
