The Coast Guard in most areas especially on shore coasts offer a basic course in water safety the rules and laws of navigating a boat. Learn the rules of the "land" or in this case water so you can see in advance how responsible you must become as a boat owner and what will be required of you to be a law obiding citizen even while on the open seas. some US Coast Guard courses will offer an official Coast Guard Certificate after the course is completed satisfactorily stating that you are an official auxillary of The United States Coast Guard. Now you are on your way.

Considering a motor yacht is an easier experience. While tides and wind currents always apply you are leaving out the proponent of a sailboat that makes it move and changing that to basically steering the boat as if it was a car being driven on water rather than on land. Again safety is aways the most important and at times the most challenging aspect. Motor Yachts the variety over 35' usually will have side thrusters a highly important means to keep control of the Yacht even under harsh conditions and will be needed to help guide the Yacht throughout the channels and for docking the yacht sandwiched between other vessels.
