- 1). Wrap the area adjacent to the ferrule with three layers of duct tape. Wrap the tape tightly on the rod so the edge of the tape abuts the edge of the ferrule.
- 2). Wave a heat gun or propane torch around the surface of the ferrule. Heat the ferrule until the glue under the metal softens. If the duct tape begins turning brown, increase the distance between the ferrule and heat source.
- 3). Wrap a cloth around the ferrule and twist the ferrule free of the rod with your fingers.
- 4). Scrape off as much of the old glue as possible from the end of the rod section with a plastic putty knife. Sand the surface of the rod above the duct tape with 200-grit sandpaper just until all traces of glue are removed.
- 5). Fill the inside of a new ferrule with a two-part waterproof epoxy and push the ferrule all the way onto the rod.
- 6). Wipe off the excess epoxy on the outside of the ferrule and the duct tape with a rag. Allow the epoxy to dry per the manufacturer's instructions. Remove the duct tape from the rod.
