How to Find Missing Money and Unclaimed Property in California

    • 1). Visit the website for the California State Controller's Office. Click the "English" link under the "Find Your Unclaimed Property" section of the page. The site also accommodates visitors who speak Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Korean and Armenian.

    • 2). Click the "Start Your Search" link on the left navigation bar on the following page.

    • 3). Click on a radio button to choose the type of search you wish to conduct. Click on the button for "Individual Owner Search" to find missing money that the state owes you or "Business/Government" to find money that the state owes your business. Click "Property ID Search" if you are searching for missing property and you have the identification number for the item.

    • 4). Type your information into the fields in the search box. Click the "Search" button to activate the search and view the results on the following page. Your name appears in the results if the state owes you money or property. Click the link next to your name for information on the amount of the money or the type of property. Follow the instructions on the page to claim your property.
