- 1). Measure your cat's neck. Begin by separating the hair around his neck so that the measurement can be as close to his skin as possible. Use a measuring tape for an exact measurement, or a string if there is no measuring tape available. Avoid using a material that stretches as it will not give an accurate measurement.
- 2). Take the measurement obtained in the first step and add an inch. The purpose of this additional inch is to make sure that there is plenty of room for the collar to fit comfortably around your cat's neck without being too loose.
- 3). Choose a collar with a size range that corresponds with the obtained measurements. Most cat safety collars are available in inch ranges because they are adjustable. Cat collars are sized to be adjustable between 6 and 12 inches depending on the age and weight of the cat. If your cat is less than 12 months old, choose a collar with 2 to 3 inches of extra length on it to accommodate growth.
- 4). Try the collar on your cat to ensure a proper fit. When a collar fits properly, it should be possible to get two fingers between your cat's neck and the collar without it being too tight or too loose. This indicates that the collar fits properly and comfortably for your cat.
- 5). Tug on the collar to test its break-away function. Cat collars are safety collars, designed to break away or tug off at a moment's notice. This protects a cat from becoming hung up when unattended. If the safety collar does not break away properly, or cannot slip off of your cat's head, replace it.
