- An important consideration is how baseball has been split into two eras. Different records exist in each era. The modern era was established starting in 1900 with the creation of the American League. Prior to this point, there were too many rule changes throughout the 19th century. Once matters stabilized in the 20th century, official record keeping for the league commenced.
- The modern day record for number of runs scored by one team in any game occurred on Aug. 22, 2007, between the Texas Rangers and the Baltimore Orioles during a doubleheader at Camden Yards. The Rangers dropped 30 on the Orioles. However, that record was smashed prior to the modern day era, when the predecessor of the Cubs, the Chicago Colts, put up 36 on the Louisville Colonels on June 29, 1897.
There is also the issue of the highest scoring game by both teams combined. This occurred when the Chicago Cubs edged out the Philadelphia Phillies 26 to 23 on Aug. 25, 1922. A total of 49 runs were scored. - It is sometimes reported that the highest scoring game by two teams combined was a 22 to 14 match up between the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies on June 29, 1950, resulting in 36 total runs. This was the record for the American League only. The real record, as reported in Section 2, occurred during the Chicago and Philadelphia game.
- In a sport as revered and steeped in tradition as the American game of baseball, record keeping is critical to preserving the integrity and historical significance of the game. These highest scoring records, particularly those set during the more stable modern era occurring after 1900, are a testament to the enduring legacy of the game of baseball. The loss or misrepresentation of these records would serve as a grave disservice to America's pastime.
- Prior to the 2007 30-run record set by the Rangers, the modern day record for number of runs scored by one team in any game had occurred twice: On June 8, 1950, between the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Browns (present day Baltimore Orioles), and also between the Chicago White Sox and the Kansas City Athletics on April 23, 1955. (The Athletics have since relocated to Oakland.) In both games the total by one team was 29.
