- 1). Turn off the water supply by turning the shutoff valves under the sink all the way to the right.
- 2). Take apart the faucet. Depending on the style of faucet, you will have to remove different pieces. In general, you will expose and remove the setscrew in the top or front of the faucet handle and then lift off pieces as you find them. Continue until you expose a cylinder sticking up from the sink under the base of the faucet spout.
- 3). Locate the diverter valve on the front of the cylinder. The diverter value is made of white plastic. Pull the diverter valve off the faucet body with needlenose pliers.
- 4). Dip a small brush in vinegar and clean the valve, removing debris and lime buildup.
- 5). Replace the washer on the diverter valve. The washer is made of black plastic and sits on the pointed part of the valve.
- 6). Coat the new washer with heatproof grease. Push the diverter value back into place and reassemble the faucet. Turn the water supply back on by turning the shutoff valves to the left.
