- Buy or make your garden flags out of nylon or polyester fabric. Both fabrics are very lightweight material, which manufacturers also use to make windbreaker jackets. When it rains, nylon is able to repel most of the water. Whatever it does not repel will dry quickly making this an obvious fabric choice for outdoor garden flags. Some flags are made of cotton, but be careful of these and wash them often since they will get moldy.
Most garden flags use embroidery in their designs, which means the manufacturer sews the design onto the fabric instead of just printing it. Most flags have stitching on both sides so that the design is correct from both sides of the hanging flag. Some flags may have two layers of embroidered nylon for designs that need to go in only one direction, such as a monogram.
Some garden flags do use printing in place of embroidery especially when printing a photo onto the fabric. - All flags have casings along the top edge for hanging. Keep in mind the size of your flag hanger when purchasing flags. Some holders allow small flags to hang along sidewalks or walkways throughout the garden. Screw other holders into the side of your house or porch to accommodate larger garden flags.
To hang your garden flag, take the pole out of the hanger. Insert the pole through the casing. Re-install the pole into the hanger and secure it to keep the flag from falling down or blowing away. - Shop in all sorts of stores to find garden flags from department stores to specialty shops. The wide variety available allows you to purchase garden flags for all seasons and holidays.
You can also sew your own garden flags with only a little bit of sewing experience. Choose from many colors of fabric and designs at the craft store. Purchase garden flag patterns or design your own unique flag.
