- 1). Clean and dry your pumpkin.
- 2). Draw a pattern on a piece of plain paper. Use coloring books or story books for inexpensive and time-saving designs. Line up your pattern with the sheet of transfer or carbon paper.
- 3). Tape the papers to the pumpkin.
- 4). Trace the pattern with the pencil, using a firm hand to transfer the pattern to the surface of the pumpkin. Remove the papers from the pumpkin when you're finished tracing the pattern.
- 5). Use the tip of the vegetable peeler and gently carve a shallow trench --- about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch deep --- into the pumpkin, following the lines made by the transfer or carbon paper. Don't puncture the pumpkin. When the design is etched, wipe away any excess pumpkin skin.
