How to Make a Bound Book

    Spiral Bind the Book

    • 1). Format and print your book pages on 8 1/2 x 11 inch sized paper. Double-sided printing will save paper.

    • 2). Place the plastic cover on top and the back cover behind the pages. Smooth out and line up the edges of the pages.

    • 3). Place the left edge of the book inside the spiral binding machine. Press down on the lever to make the perforations you need, where the coil will be inserted. If your book is thick, you can do this in batches.

    • 4). Place the coil you chose for your book into the spiral binding machine and open it with the appropriate lever. Line up your book with the coils and insert them into the perforations.

    • 5). Push the lever on your binding machine back to close the spiral bound book.

    Perfect Bind Your Book

    • 1). Print your book to the desired size. For a standard-size paperback book, it is easiest to print your pages on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper and then cut them in half (you can use a cutting machine from your local copy shop) to create 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inch pages. Line up the edges of the book so that the left side is completely even. Measure the left spine of the book with a ruler.

    • 2). Print your book cover on 80# cover stock, a heavy card stock or something similar. Your book cover should be large enough to fit the length and width of your printed pages plus an allowance for the size of the spine. For example, if you are binding a 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inch book with a 1/2 inch spine, your cover should be 8 1/2 inches tall and 12 inches wide (5 1/2 inches to cover the front of the book, 5 1/2 inches to cover the back, and 1/2 inch for the spine).

    • 3). Score the printed cover at both sides of the spine. All this means is that you are making a very light indentation so that the book spine will easily fold. Think of a printed book and how the edges of the spine are folded. You can use the rounded edge of a paperclip and a ruler to score the cover.

    • 4). Apply the PUR glue to the left side of the book pages and allow it to dry a little per the instructions before wrapping the cover around your printed book. Press down on the spine to make sure that it is set tightly. Allow the book to dry for at least 24 hours. If the right edge of the book is a little uneven, chop off a small amount to even it up. You should use a heavy-duty cutting machine or have someone at your local copy shop trim the edges of the book for a clean look.
