- 1). Place the pallet on a hard, flat work surface, such as a concrete floor. Put on your safety goggles to protect your eyes from flying debris.
- 2). Flip the pallet upside down, with the lesser number of planks facing up. Typical wooden pallets feature a continuous row of planks, while the underside of the pallet may use fewer planks for added support.
- 3). Wedge the angled portion of your flat pry bar between the mating surface of a plank and the support block of the pallet. Use the hammer to wedge the flat bar securely between these two surfaces.
- 4). Separate the side of the plank from the support by rocking the flat bar back and forth. As the plank loosens, remove and secure the flat bar in different areas around the nails to avoid splitting the wood.
- 5). Repeat steps three and four to separate the rest of the bottom-side planks from the support blocks.
- 6). Hit the sides of the exposed support blocks with a hammer to separate them from the remaining rows of continuous top-side planks. Use the pry bar to completely separate the supports, when necessary. Consider using a scrap piece of wood as a buffer between the hammer and support blocks to avoid surface marring, if desired.
- 7). Use the clawed portion of the hammer or the angled end of the pry bar to remove the nails from each plank. Striking the pointed ends of the nails with the hammer will push the head of the nail up for easier removal.
- 8). Collect and discard the nails to finish the dismantlement process.
