Wanaka in the South Island of New Zealand is well known as a tourist mecca during winter - surrounded by mountains and alpine lakes it's simply stunning and the perfect place to spend some time booked into a luxury lodge during the ski season, however Wanaka also offers visitors many great things to do during the summer too.
The Summerdaze Festival runs every year from the 31st of December to the 31st of January and packed with activities to suit everyone.
You can attend a kite making workshop and then fly your kite at the Grand Kite Display or perhaps the New Years Eve celebration or the rodeo.
If you are looking for physically challenging events there are several you can participate in depending on your fitness level - from 5km Charity Walk/Run which raises money for the Upper Clutha Children's Medical Trust, or one of the Challenge Wanaka events which include half and full triathlons.
For those not quite up to this level but would love to be involved - you could even volunteer to assist the racers.
You'll find that even without the snow capped peaks the view of the mountains from your luxury lodge in Wanaka will inspire you to hit the mountain trails - there are many to suit all fitness levels and you'll be able to take in even more breathtaking views from the many vantage points along the way.
The lake also comes into its own in the summer and it suitable for water skiing, kayaking, swimming and jet-boating.
You can also catch Warbirds over Wanaka air show if you are in town at Easter.
This annual event celebrates air craft of yesteryear and showcasing some of the few remaining models of some famous flying machines or if art is more your thing there is a biennial event called the Festival of Colour which celebrates art.
You'll also find plenty of arts and crafts - try the Sunday Market to discover local artists, as well as retail therapy in gorgeous shops such as the Wonder Room which sells gifts and home decor or perhaps while away the hours at one of cafes, bars or restaurants.
Your luxury lodge host will be able to recommend some wonderful local places or if you choose to self-cater there is a modern supermarket as well as an organic produce store.
Even without its famous snow it's easy to see why Wanaka is the perfect place to head to for your summer holiday and you will enjoy every minute!
