How to Choose Organic Cloth Diapers

    • 1
      Organic prefold diapers.

Consider the organic prefold if you are a stay-at-home parent and want to keep costs down. These diapers are the least expensive of all the cloth diaper styles. They are also adjustable and can be used from birth to potty training and beyond. These diapers are a bit more work, however, and it takes time to get your pinning style down pat. You may want to buy or borrow a lifesize doll to practice you pinning style ahead of time. You can also use Snappi diaper fasteners to use instead of pins. These diapers are more difficult to use than fitted styles and you may experience more leakage than with fitted diapers.

      Organic all-in-one diaper by BumGenius.

Try the All-in-One (AIO). It is a fitted, organic diaper that requires the least amount of work. There is no need for pins, Snappi fasteners or diaper covers. The AIO comes in a variety of sizes and colors. It offers a nice alternative to disposables, because of its built-in moisture barrier, but it is still washable. It uses either velcro or snaps to fasten the diaper, making each size adjustable to your baby's waist size. For a little extra thickness for heavy wetters, you'll want to use a doubler (insert). These diapers may not fit as well as you'd like them to, however, since they can't be folded down to adjust for smaller sizes or shorter bodies. These diapers also include a lining that is made of an inorganic fabric that keeps heat and moisture in. This can lead to rashes, if you don't change your baby often enough. They are also more expensive than the prefold.

      Pocket all-in-one or all-in-two

Consider Pocket AIOs. They use a moisture barrier fabric on the outside and a layer of high-absorbency, organic fabric on the inside. They come in a variety of colors and sizes. They are also one of the most expensive alternatives, since they can't be used by themselves. There is an insert pocket built into the diaper where you place a diaper doubler. These diapers can be one of the most expensive to use, though they do come in styles that are adjustable.

      Fitted organic diaper.

Consider the option of a totally-organic, fitted cloth diaper. This one also comes in a variety of sizes, but requires the use of pins or diaper fasteners for closure. These diapers are adjustable down to preemie sizes and can be used at night for potty-training. You can add a doubler or insert to increase the absorbency for heavy wetters. While these diapers are more expensive than prefolds, they are less expensive than AIOs or pocket diapers. Leakage is less likely than with prefolds, due to the elastic at the legs and back and rashes are less likely than with AIOs because there is no moisture barrier.

    • 5). Be aware that most of these diapers come in a variety of organic and sustainable fabrics made from cotton, hemp, bamboo and soy fibers. You should buy some samples before making a choice. Buy one or two samples from each type, from different manufactures. While you may think you like one style or fabric better, you won't know until you have one in your hands. Wash your samples a few times in warm water and dry them on medium heat to get a feel for how well they'll hold up and how fluffy and absorbent they are.
