How to Get Rid of the Odor of Dog Urine

    • 1). Thoroughly clean the problem area. Blot the urine instead of rubbing it in when cleaning up the urine. Begin cleaning the spot outward and moving in if possible. Use water on the carpet around the area where the urine is or was, in order to dilute the urine and minimize the smell. Blot the water, again moving inward. You can also saturate the area with club soda and blot up the club soda, again moving inward in the area that smells of urine.

    • 2). Use an odor remover. You can use a homemade odor remover consisting of a baking soda and water mixture. Mix one cup baking soda with 2 cups water. Apply liberally to the area that smells of urine and allow to stand for several hours. If possible, lift up carpeting to apply the mixture to carpet pads or floors underneath. Urine soaks into the carpet and penetrates the carpet fibers, so you want to make sure the odor remover does also. After the odor remover has remained on the urine scented spot for several hours, blot up using paper towels and then vacuum thoroughly.

    • 3). Use commercial products designed for urine removal. Simple Solution is a cleaner that uses nontoxic enzymes that neutralize urine. Nature's Miracle is another specially formulated urine removal product designed to neutralize and eliminate the odor of urine.
