How to Install Bar End Shifters

    Stock Shifter Removal

    • 1). Remove the bar tape from your handlebars. This will reveal the clamps of your drop bar shifters and allow you to remove them.

    • 2). Loosen the drop bar shifter clamps and slide the old shifters off the ends of the bars, using a hex wrench (usually 4 or 5mm).

    • 3). Loosen the cable clamp on the front derailer with a hex wrench (usually 4 or 5mm) and remove any cable stops attached to the cable with cable cutters.

    • 4). Pull the cable out of the housing and remove the old housing from the bike. Set the front shifter, cable and housing aside.

    Installing Bar End Shifters

    • 1). Place the end of the rear shifter in the end of the handlebar. Be sure that the rear shifter is on the right side of the handlebars. Tighten the inner clamp with a 4mm hex wrench.

    • 2). Thread a new cable through the cable stop of the shifter. Be sure the cable exits the shifter on the underside of the handlebars.

    • 3). Cut a section of shifter housing to run from the shifter to the first frame cable stop on the downtube of the bike. Thread the shifter cable through the housing and set it in the stops.

    • 4). Use electrical tape or scotch tape to secure the shifter housing to the handlebar. Allow the housing to hang free enough that it does not bind when the bars are turned. This will result in upshifts during turns.

    • 5). Run the shifter cable through the plastic cable router underneath the bike's bottom bracket.

    • 6). Cut a section of shifter cable housing to run from the chain stay cable stop to the rear derailer. Make this section long enough that there are no twists or kinks in the housing.

    • 7). Thread the cable through the rear housing and secure it to the rear derailer cable stop with a hex wrench.

    • 8). Insert the front bar end shifter into the handlebar on the left side and secure the inner clamp using a hex wrench.

    • 9). Thread a shifter cable through the bar end shifter cable stop and be sure that it exits on the underside of the handlebar.

    • 10

Cut a piece of housing to connect the bar end shifter to the first cable stop on the bike's downtube. Thread the cable through the housing and secure the housing to the handlebar using scotch or electrical tape.

    • 11

Run the shifter cable through the cable router underneath the bike's bottom bracket and up to the front derailer cable stop. Hold the cable tight and tighten the cable stop with a hex wrench.

    • 12

Rewrap the handlebars with new handlebar tape. Allow the shifter housing to hang free enough that it does not bind when turning.
