- 1). Go to the state-run website that has the Texas Constitution and Statutes available on it (see Resources). According to the Tenants' Council of Houston, the Texas Renter's Bill of Rights refers to 14 sections of the Texas Property Code. These sections can be accessed through this website.
- 2). Contact the Texas State Bar, which publishes a handbook about tenant's rights. This 52-page document has both the laws that give renters rights and explanations on how to exercise them. The Texas State Bar publication can be found on the organization's website or can be contacted at 1-800-204-2222.
- 3). Check to see if the city you live in has a tenants' association. Houston, Dallas and Austin have their own councils for tenants. These organizations can help you get a copy of the laws that explain your rights. If you don't live in one of these cities, consider contacting a legal aid organization. Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid serves southwest Texas, Lone Star Legal Aid serves southern and eastern Texas and Legal Aid of Northwest Texas serves northern and western Texas. The legal aid organizations serve only low-income people.
