- 1). Mix the oxygen bleach and cool water in a plastic bucket, following the ratio recommended by the manufacturer. Dip the brush into the mixture and rub across the deck, following the natural grain of the redwood. Scrub harder on green areas or areas with mold and mildew. Rinse the deck with fresh water.
- 2). Check the deck, looking for signs of wood decay or broken boards. Remove the boards by unscrewing the metal or wood screws holding the wood in place. Replace those boards with new pieces cut to the same size as the old ones.
- 3). Apply an even coating of wood brightener to the surface of the redwood deck, including any new pieces. After 30 minutes, rinse the deck with fresh water. The wood brightener removes tannins and other products that mask the natural color of the wood.
- 4). Fill any holes or cracks with a small amount of wood putty. Push the putty into the hole and let dry overnight. Rub down the surface with the sandpaper until the wood putty fills in the hole and makes it sit even with the rest of the deck.
- 5). Dip an old rag into the wood stain and wipe across the surface of the deck. Work on one redwood board at a time. Wait a few minutes and wipe a different rag across the surface, cleaning off any stain that does not soak into the wood. Move across the deck staining each board.
