How to Drop Vocals From Songs

    • 1). Open your audio editing program, and import your song files. Click on "File," and then select "Import New File." The file and a sound-wave graph are displayed once the file is imported.

    • 2). Use your mouse to click on a portion of the song, and then press "Play" to make sure it's the correct song that you want to edit.

    • 3). Open your editing options menu, and select "Split Stereo Track." Audacity displays a box on the left side of the screen with the title of your imported file. Click on the little arrow to drop down the menu, and select "Split Stereo Track."

    • 4). Highlight the bottom track with your mouse. Click anywhere in the gray box on the left of the track or click and drag your cursor over the entire track. The track is highlighted gray once it is entirely selected.

    • 5). Open your editing option menu, and then select "Invert." Audacity offers an effects menu, which is called "Effect" and is located at the top of the screen. It takes a few seconds for the track to invert.

    • 6). Choose to set both tracks, top and bottom, as "Mono." Click on Audacity's drop-down menu to the left of the track, and select "Mono." Do this for both tracks. The vocals won't completely be erased, but they are barely audible. Save this file if it adequately meets your needs. Continue the process to completely remove the vocals.

    • 7). Save your project file to combine both tracks into one.

    • 8). Close out of your audio editor, and then open it again. Import the previously saved file by clicking on "File" and then selecting "Import New File." The file is one audio track with barely audible vocals.

    • 9). Use your mouse cursor to highlight the entire track. Click your mouse at the beginning of the track, and drag it over the entire track.

    • 10

Open your "Effects" menu, and click on "Amplify." An amplification box pops open.

    • 11

Shift the amplification cursor into the negative. It likely is set at "0." The more you move the cursor into the negative, the more soft sounds are removed from your track. The amount you put the amplification cursor into the negative is up to you. This step fully removes the barely audible vocals from your track.

Save your file as a digital audio file that you can use. Click on "File" in Audacity, and then select "Export File as MP3" or export the file as a ".WMV." You need to download the LAME MP3 Encoder for Audacity if you're using Audacity and want to save the file as an MP3. This is a free plugin that allows you to save MP3 files. Download the plugin, and you are able to save MP3 files without any other set up.
