Many people who have a basic knowledge when it comes to playing the piano will then at some stage want to learn to read piano music as well.
In this article we will be taking a look at some ways in which a person can help themselves to learn how to read piano music.
As with typing a person when playing the piano will need to learn not to look down at their hands but rather at the music that is placed in front of them in order that they can read the notes.
Certainly after a while this will become second nature to the more experienced pianist.
In fact they will find reading the notes on the pages of sheet music in front of them will be just as easy as if they were reading a normal book.
However below we provide some tips which should help to ensure that you can learn to read piano music much more effectively.
Tip 1: Purchase a music book which is different from the ones that you are already using and which is either for the skill level you are at or may be just a little easier.
Plus ensure that the music book you choose contains music that you will enjoy playing and listening to, but also ensure that it is something which you have never heard before.
Then what you should do is open the book at the first page and then start to look at the notes on that page.
First off start by saying the notes to yourself very softly and begin to understand them at first, but do not actually play them as yet.
Now once you feel you have an understanding of these notesyou should then begin to play them very slowly at first and say each key note in your head as you play the music in front of you.
Plus look at them to see just what they look like as well.
Then once you have completed the piece in front of you play it again and again until you feel comfortable playing it.
Tip 2: Even if you are not sat in front of your piano you can still learn how to read piano music whilst you are elsewhere.
It is important that as you read the notes in your music book that you look at their positions within the make up of the music and how each one looks.
Then keep reading each piece over and over again until you have retained it in your memory.
Then once you are ready to sit at a piano then place the music in front of you and see if you are able to play the whole tune through as comfortably as possibly.
You may find that you need to practice the piece of music that you have learnt by reading the notes by themselves several times before you find yourself being able to play it without making too many mistakes.
