How to Remove an American Standard Sink Drain

    • 1). Position yourself underneath the sink. Place the bucket underneath the p-trap.

    • 2). Loosen the couplings on either side of the p-trap with either your hands (PVC pipe) or pliers (metal). Pull the p-trap out of the plumbing. Be careful, as it is full of water. Empty the p-trap into the bucket.

    • 3). Loosen the jamb nut, the large nut located just beneath the sink, with a pair of pliers. Pull this off the tail piece, along with the rubber washer above it.

    • 4). Turn the tail piece counterclockwise with your hands to loosen it from the drain above.

    • 5). Place a block of wood underneath the drain. Tap this block of wood with a hammer or mallet until the drain flange pops out in the sink above.
