- 1). Choose a topic. A topic should not be too broad. For example, soccer is too broad. Try to write a paragraph on the rules, equipment, positions or favorite teams. The topic should also lend itself to writing at least four sentences, but six is better. If you don't have enough detail to write four to six sentences, the topic is too narrow. Once the topic is chosen, you need to write a topic sentence--three to five supporting sentences and a concluding or transitioning sentence.
- 2). Write a topic sentence. A topic sentence is one sentence that tells the reader what the paragraph is about. The topic sentence can be anywhere in the paragraph, but many times it is the first sentence in the paragraph. The topic sentence can list the basic information that you will discuss in greater detail later.Do not start the paragraph, "My paragraph is about soccer" or "I am going to be talking about soccer." These are boring topic sentences.Try starting like this, "The game of soccer allows for a maximum of 11 players on the field, and the positions are generally goal keeper, fullback, midfielder and forward."
- 3). Choose details to create supporting sentences. Decide on three to five details that you want to include in your paragraph. Turn these details into full sentences. These sentences become the "meat" or the middle of the paragraph. For example, if you decide to write about the many positions in soccer, you could have one sentence that describes the job of the goal keeper, one on the fullback, one on the midfielders, and one on the forwards.
- 4). Write a concluding or transitioning ending sentence. If the paragraph is to stand alone, the last sentence should wrap up your ideas. If the paragraph is part of a larger essay, transition words for the next sentence should be included.Examples of transition words are: next, also, besides, in addition, likewise, as a result, for this reason, therefore, for the most part, generally, especially, for example, for instance, above all, comparatively, aside from, in other words, instead, however, at first, in conclusion.
