- 1). Park the Escort and turn off the engine. Place tire blocks behind the rear tires.
- 2). Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels with a tire iron or 17 mm socket and breaker bar.
- 3). Lift the front of the vehicle with the jack and rest the axles on jack stands.
- 4). Take the lug nuts off and remove the front wheels.
- 5). Remove the two caliper bolts with a 13 mm socket and ratchet. Lift the caliper from the caliper bracket and rest it on top of the Escort's steering arm.
- 6). Slide the worn brake pads from the caliper bracket.
- 7). Apply brake grease to the back sides (called shims) of the new brake pads. Slide the pads into the slots of the caliper bracket.
- 8). Open the brake bleed valve on the caliper with a 10 mm wrench. Place a drip pan below the caliper to catch the expelled brake fluid.
- 9). Place the channel-lock pliers over the caliper piston and the back side of the caliper itself. Squeeze the pliers to force the piston inside the caliper. Remove the pliers after you have completely depressed the piston.
- 10
Close the brake bleed valve with the 10 mm wrench. - 11
Place the caliper back over the caliper bracket and the new brake pads. Screw in the caliper bolts by hand before tightening them with the 13 mm socket and ratchet. - 12
Place the wheel back onto the wheel bolts and screw on the lug nuts. - 13
Lift the front of the Escort to remove the jack stands. Lower the front of the vehicle to the ground and tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron. - 14
Start the Ford and press the brake pedal three times slowly. Pull the hood release lever and move to the front of the Escort. - 15
Lift the hood and remove the master cylinder cap. The cap is located near the back of the engine compartment, to the right of the Escort's engine. - 16
Check the reservoir to determine the level of brake fluid within. Place a funnel into the container and fill the master cylinder with brake fluid as necessary. - 17
Remove the funnel and replace the cap. Close the Escort's hood.
