How to Change an Alternator in a 1996 Honda Accord

    • 1). Disconnect the battery in the Accord. The battery has two wires connected to it, a positive and a negative. Both need to be removed using a socket wrench.

    • 2). Disconnect the alternator's four-prong connector. It is connected to the rear end of the alternator. Disconnect the terminal nut from the alternator, also located at the back, with a socket wrench. Once the terminal nut is removed, disconnect the wire.

    • 3). Remove the bottom bolt and the adjusting bolt of the alternator with a socket wrench. Remove the lock nut. Pull the alternator out of the Accord.

    • 4). Install the new alternator and replace all the bolts in the reverse order in which they were removed. The alternator belt must have enough tension. If it does not, use a torque wrench to tighten before bolting the bottom bolt, the adjusting bolt, the lock nut and the four-prong connector. Replace alternator wire, and reinstall the battery with the positive and negative ports connected.
