- 1). Knit the body of the hat until it is as long as the wearer's hand at the little finger. Divide the number of stitches on your needles by seven. If the answer is not an even number, note the remainder, say two or three. Knit the next round, decreasing by that number of stitches. Make the decreases by knitting two stitches together two or three times, whatever number it takes to get the final number of stitches in the round down to a number divisible by seven.
- 2). Knit one round plain. Divide the number of stitches into seven sections. Put a marker at the end of each section. Knit one decrease round by knitting to within two stitches of the marker, and then knitting two together. To knit two together, insert the right needle into two stitches at the same time, and knit them as one.
- 3). Knit another plain round. Alternate between knitting a decrease round and a plain round until there are only seven stitches left on the needles. Remove the stitch markers.
- 4). Break off the yarn, leaving a tail about 7 inches long. Thread this tail onto the yarn darning needle. Thread the needle through the remaining seven stitches and pull them up tight to eliminate the hole at the top of the hat. Weave the tail into the purl bumps of the stitches on the wrong, inside side of the hat.
