Feline acne is seen in cats and involves forming of blackheads along with inflammation on the chin of the cat and the areas surrounding it.
Severe cases respond to treatment slower and detract the cat's health and its appearance a lot.
Feline acne can affect a cat of any age or breed.
Sebaceous glands that secrete oils lubricate the cat's skin hence preventing irritation and dryness in that area.
These glands are present in the chin of the cat's skin, its tail, eyelids, scrotum, prepuce and lips as they are connected to their hair follicles.
The follicles get clogged with sebaceous black colour material and form blackheads.
They become swollen, irritated and infected which leads to pustules.
Your cat if infected with acne will experience itching as well as discomfort caused by swelling and also bacterial growth inside the infected glands.
You will notice it rubbing its chin and face along hard objects like a table, chair or rocks.
Excessive rubbing leave greasy patches on the cat at times.
Also, secondary fungal infections can take place.
Main reasons for feline acne are as follows: 1.
Hyperactive sebaceous glands 2.
Stress 3.
Poor hygiene Treatment for such acne includes topical treatment like warm compresses to the cat's chin or other infected areas as this is quite sufficient for milder cases.
A veterinarian might be required to treat the affected area if it becomes infected secondarily with a fungus or bacteria.
Treatment of this acne begins with a clinical drainage of these pustules accompanied with a full course of antibiotics given orally.
