- 1). Remove the guitar strings.
- 2). Tape the guitar neck for protection. Cover the wood of the fretboard and the guitar nut with masking tape.
- 3). File the entire fretboard from top to bottom with a fine, 10-inch-long file. Apply even pressure to both ends of the file, and work the length of the fretboard. Lay a straight edge across the frets periodically to check which frets sit higher than the rest.
- 4). Stop filing when the straight edge touches all frets when laid lengthwise down the guitar neck. The frets are now level.
- 5). Shape the frets with a rounded fret file. Work the file across each fret until the crown of the frets are rounded.
- 6). Rub each fret with steel wool. Work the steel wool back and forth until the fret surfaces becomes smooth.
- 7). Remove the protective tape and restring the guitar.
