One of the most important positions on your youth football team is the quarterback. In order for the rest of the team to do their job and get the ball in the end zone, the quarterback needs to be able to get the ball in their hands. Passing is almost like an art form that requires a lot of practice and effort in order to master. It is important that you work closely with all of the players on your team, but you may need to spend some additional time here and there to help your quarterback develop his arm.
Coaching a youth football quarterback begins with teaching the proper grip for throwing that perfect spiral pass. One of the most common errors that quarterbacks make is placing the palm of their hand against the football. Only the fingertips should be on the ball in a very light grip. The light grip will enable the quarterback to have better control over the ball so that they throw more accurately. While this is an ideal holding position, it can be quite difficult for those players with larger hands. You also want to make sure that the first or index finger is on the seam of the football. This is what produces the spin when the ball is being released during the pass.
Another important aspect of throwing good spiral passes is having your youth football quarterback work on proper release technique. It is critical for the quarterback to pick a receiver and keep their eyes on the receiver. The quarterback should be bringing their arm back and using a circular motion with the arm moving forward to release the pass. The ball should never be released in the pass before it reaches the top of the passing arc. It is important that you also follow through after you release the football, as this will also increase your accuracy and get the ball into the right hands.
Keep in mind that teaching youth football quarterbacks how to properly pass will not happen overnight. These skills may take months to learn properly, so be patient with your quarterbacks. Keep in mind they are kids and not NFL players who have had years and years of football experience. If your kids seem to be struggling with the concepts of proper passing, be encouraging to them rather than being harsh or too tough on them.
