Definition:
Sexology simply refers to the study of human sexuality in the broadest sense. This includes the study of human sexual behaviors, activities, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, as well as the study of the systems that govern and regulate human sexuality in society. While contemporary use of the term sexology refers mostly to social and biological sciences, sexologists in the past may have focused only on the philosophy of human sexuality.
Sexology is interdisciplinary, and not affiliated with one profession or academic discipline. Sexology is practiced by medical doctors, psychologists, social workers, psychotherapists, archeologists, to name just a few professions. Sexology is also practiced by many non-professionals. In the academy sociologists, anthropologists, psychologists, medical researchers, as well as those in humanities and cultural studies may all include sexology under their research interests.
Sexology may involve research and theory or it may involve practice, working with individuals, groups, or populations on issues of sexuality and sexual health.
